Porcelain Veneers for smile makeovers
What are dental veneers?

A veneer is a thin protective layer used to cover the tooth surface. It is used to protect damaged teeth or perhaps to improve the look of misformed/chipped teeth.

Veneers come in several flavors, depending on the material used to build them: they can be porcelain veneers/ceramic veneers or composite veneers. Of these, composite veneers are cheaper but less durable than porcelain veneers. Additionally, porcelain veneers look more natural than composite ones.

The veneer can be molded to your teeth, sent to a dental technician for indrect fabrication, then sent back for bonding to your teeth. The entire process is kind of like putting window tint on your car or nail polish on your nails. The veneer acts as a protective layer around the tooth or teeth and it is glued on using resin technology.

What are the advantages to using veneers?

Veneers are used to improve the appearance of teeth by resurfacing them, making them look straighter, and whiter. Thus crooked, damaged and stained teeth are gone in a near instant.

On top of that, gaps or spaces are quickly closed, resulting in a more pleasing and more perfectly aligned smile.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers no matter how durable can last only up to 10 years and a minimum of 5 years - they are not indestructible. To make sure you make the most of your veneer, you must always follow a strict oral hygiene regimen. A regular visit to the dentist is also in order to make sure that your dental veneers are well taken cared of.

How long does it take to make a dental veneer?

Traditionally, porcelain veneers take 2 visits or more for casting/molding and fitting, then fabrication. However a new type of technology enables a dentist to make procelain veneers in less than 10 minutes! This is CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) - a dental restoration product that allows indirect ceramic dental restoration with the help of computers.

I heard of Lumineers, are they the same as veneers?

Yes and no. Lumineers use the same concept with a new technology twist: they use a thinner material is just as strong as veneers.
