9 Things to Consider When Getting Clear Aligners

Clear aligners make getting orthodontic treatments a lot more pleasant. These devices make it possible to discreetly straighten teeth. Once upon a time, those dealing with misaligned or crooked teeth did not have any other options besides traditional metal braces. While these devices have been proven to be very effective at improving the alignment of teeth, they do tend to ruin the aesthetics of a person's smile.

Things to consider before getting clear aligners

1. Speech might be impaired for a few days

Most people experience some trouble pronouncing certain words when they first start wearing clear aligners. It is normal to have a lisp during the adjustment period. The best way to get past this is to slow down when talking. Speech should return to normal after a few days.

2. People will not see the device

It is virtually impossible for others to know when a person is wearing clear braces. Still, some patients often find themselves wondering if others know they are wearing a prosthetic. They will not unless the patient tells them.

3. Clear braces are more popular than people think

There are many people who wear clear braces all over the world, but since these are almost impossible to see it is hard to know that fact. Metal braces seem more popular than they actually are.

4. Patients need to take them out for meals

Taking out clear braces while surrounded by friends at the lunch counter is not the best idea. Patients should find a bathroom or other private area where the device can be removed and reinserted after meals. Patients should avoid eating with clear braces at all cost. It can lead to the device getting stained and it increases the risk of tooth decay.

5. Be prepared to be bombarded with questions if others know about the treatment

There are many people who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth. Patients should expect to be asked about how their treatment is going since others are likely interested in doing the same.

6. Patients should brush after meals

Brushing after meals is essential when wearing clear braces. Removing food particles and plaque from teeth before reinserting the device after meals helps to keep tooth decay at bay.

7. You cannot chew gum

Patients can only drink water when clear braces are being worn. Since the prosthetic should be worn for at least 22 hours each day, habits like chewing gum are counterproductive.

8. Treatment will likely take longer than expected

While digital imaging makes it possible for dentists to make accurate projections about how a patient's teeth will look after wearing clear braces for a certain amount of time, many patients end up wearing braces for longer than initially anticipated.

9. Orthodontic treatments do not stop with braces

When alignment issues have been corrected by wearing braces, patients still have to use retainers to keep their teeth properly aligned. Some patients have to wear retainers for about two years after treatment.
