Options for Missing Tooth Replacement

Sometimes it can be challenging to find cost-efficient options for replacing a missing tooth. However, there are multiple ways to go about replacing a missing tooth, which is much different than replacing multiple missing teeth.

By understanding all the options for replacing a missing tooth, you can make an informed decision that fits your circumstances the best.

Options for Missing Tooth Replacement

While doing nothing is always an option, assuming the missing tooth does not pose any dental health risks other than cosmetic reasons, it can often cause stress and anxiety in many who suffer from a missing tooth.

The following are the four best options for missing tooth replacement.

Dental Implant

The absolute best way to replace a single missing tooth is to have a dental implant procedure done.

A dental implant refers to the process of placing an artificial tooth by fusing an “implant” into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. While it is a safe procedure, it is often the most invasive and requires a surgical procedure to complete. The dental implant option for missing teeth also tends to be the most expensive replacement option.

However, dental implants look, feel and function as if it were a natural tooth in a way no other procedure can replicate.

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge refers to the process of replacing a missing tooth by using the neighboring teeth to help cement the artificial tooth into place. While it is somewhat invasive, it is a much easier and safer procedure than a dental implant.

Many argue that a dental bridge is better than a dental implant when attempting to replace a single tooth (rather than multiple teeth), and it is typically much more cost efficient than a dental implant.

The only downside to a dental bridge is that the dentist may need to alter the connecting teeth, which in many cases are entirely healthy.

Partial denture

While it may be best for many to pay the additional costs and receive a more permanent solution that does not come out, a removable partial denture is the most cost-efficient way to replace a single missing tooth.

A removable partial denture is an artificial tooth that is placed in the mouth and can be removed when it is not needed. The downside to a partial denture is that it feels the least like a natural tooth while in place.

It is essential to keep the partial denture clean and soaked in a cleaning solution at night.

Flipper

A flipper is typically seen as a temporary solution that is worn while waiting for a more permanent solution to become ready, such as a dental implant or dental bridge.

A flipper, otherwise known as a temporary denture, is very cost efficient and although it may not function as well as an implant, bridge or partial denture, it helps improve the cosmetic aspect of a missing tooth.

If you are unsure about which option is best for your particular situation, be sure to consult with a dentist for more information.
